Mobile Questions Answered by Google and KGB

Driving around looking for a store or business location? Need to check the weather, sports scores, or a flight status? Then, Google SMS is your best friend!
Just SMS your question to Google and their engine will respond with an answer via your mobile phone’s text function. SMS stands for “Short Message Service.” It’s the technology used when you send a text message. Paired with Google’s search technology, you can access a myriad of useful information, all on the go.
To use the service, setup a new text message and enter “466453″ (letter codes for “GOOGLE”) into the “To” area. In the message body area enter your search query. For example, when I was lost today looking for my favorite coffee shop, I sent the phrase “panera herndon.” Google returned a message to me with the addresses and phone numbers of both the Herndon and Reston Panara locations. You’ll generally receive 2-3 messages of information within a minute or two. Problem solved! I’ve used this service for years and it’s really helpful when lost or trying to settle a bet.
Google SMS is free (although your wireless carrier may charge you for sent or received text messages.)

There’s also a new mobile question and answer service that just launched. Send your full text question to KGB (Knowledge Generation Bureau) messaging service (at “542542″) and a live person will reply with an answer. To test it out, and because I knew the NFL schedule was released yesterday, I asked “Who will the Redskins play in the first game of the 2009 season.” Within 2 minutes, I got my answer: “The Washington Redskins play the New York Giants at Giants Stadium. The game is at 4:15 on Sun, Sep 3.” Quick and thorough.
KGB costs 99 cents per answer (in addition to any wireless carrier text message charges.) The charge will appear on your normal wireless bill.

Thanks Rachel. I will definitely use the Google SMS until I break down and buy a GPS unit. Talk with you soon!
