All About Zip Archive Files

So, we just emailed you a .zip file attachment or a URL with instructions to download a .zip file attachment. Now that you have the file or access to it, what is it and what do you do with it? Instructions follow!

What is a .zip file?
Creating a ZIP archive is a method of compressing computer files into a small size, so they can be transferred quickly over the Internet. Files that have been compressed in this manner are named using the “.zip” extension.

Netdrafter frequently uses ZIP files when we have a lot of items to send to our web development and graphic design customers.

Using a .zip file
The process of extracting the compressed files from a ZIP file is known as “unzipping.” There are two options available to “unzip” these archives.

  1. Windows XP and Vista have a standard utility for unzipping files.
    • Double-click the zipped file.
    • In the window that opens, click ‘Extract all files’.
    • Click the ‘Next’ button.
    • In the ‘Select a Destination’ window, select the location where you want the folder to be placed, for example, the Desktop.
    • Click the ‘Next’ button.
    • In the ‘Extraction Complete’ window, select Show extracted files.
    • Click the ‘Finish’ button.

  2. Freeware, shareware, and paid ZIP utility programs are available for download.
    • For PC users, we recommend WinZip, available as a free 45 day trial.
    • For Mac users, we recommend StuffIt Expander, available free.

Some email systems block .zip files as a security procedure. If an email sent from us references a .zip file but no file appears to be attached, please contact us and we’ll find another way to get the information to you.
